Health Navigator: CANAVUA Hires a Home-Care Nurse

Thanks to funding from the Canadian Red Cross, CANAVUA has hired a home-care nurse to serve its clients in their homes or online.

Edmonton - January 25th, 2021

For over a decade, Canadian Volunteers United in Action Society (CANAVUA) has spearheaded the "Health Navigator" program to ensure Edmontonians' equal access to healthcare delivery services in English and French.

In 2020, we received funding from the Canadian Red Cross to hire a bilingual home-care nurse for our clients. Our nurse speaks English and French fluently, is fully certified to practise in Alberta and has years of experience working in hospitals in the province.

The COVID-19 pandemic has surely increased the number of patients seeking specialized medical care in their homes, whether through visitation or online appointments. CANAVUA's new initiative will help to meet this need in Edmonton, especially within the local French-speaking community. Furthermore, many vulnerable populations, including seniors, newcomers to Canada, handicapped persons, the immunocompromised and individuals with reduced mobility, will benefit from our service.

CANAVUA's Health Navigator program was founded on the principles that Canadians from all provinces should have access to quality healthcare in both official languages and that barriers to access, particularly for Francophones and newcomers to Canada, must be eliminated.

We are happy to offer this new service as part of our longstanding Health Navigator program.

Thanks to funding from the Canadian Red Cross, we can take another step forward in achieving these goals.

We invite all French- and English-speaking residents of Edmonton wishing to book an appointment with our home-care nurse to contact our executive director, Dicky Dikamba, at (780) 729-1709 or at direction@canavua.org. Be sure to specify your availability and your preferred means of communicating (either in person, over Zoom or via Google Meet). This service is offered completely free of charge to Anglophone and Francophones alike.
